StraightNumbers is local-first accounting and Making Tax Digital (MTD) software that helps individuals and their agents keep digital records and submit UK tax directly to HMRC.

What the software does

• Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA): digital record keeping, quarterly updates and final declaration for self-employment and UK & foreign property income.
• VAT (MTD): keep VAT records and submit VAT returns, with the "Check a UK VAT number" service built in.
• Construction Industry Scheme (CIS): record and reconcile CIS deductions.
• Bookkeeping: invoices, expenses, contacts and a chart of accounts that feed the figures submitted to HMRC.

Local-first by design

StraightNumbers runs on your own machine. Your business and client records stay in local databases on that machine — there is no central server holding your data. Figures are transmitted only when you choose to submit them to HMRC, under your own authorisation, over a secure connection.

Security & data protection

Access is protected by a password stored only as a one-way cryptographic hash. Your data is encrypted at rest, and credentials used to connect to HMRC are encrypted at rest. You can export all of your records at any time in a machine-readable format, and the software collects no analytics and performs no tracking.
